Research. Ideation. Impact.
Conceived in partnership with Future Memory Inc., this research-creation project sets out to provide a platform for a multitude of voices to contribute to meaningful research and policy change. We will engage communities, kids and educators in a thoughtful conversation about the future of play, through STEAM exercises and creative workshops.
- Impact of technology on development: How do kids’ relationships to tech-infused toys impact their sense of self, relationships with others, and relationship to technology?
- The good, the bad and the ugly: What are the most exciting benefits that tech-infused toys present (from access to information, to nontraditional learning techniques for kids with disabilities), and what are the biggest threats to fair play? What alternative futures do we want to imagine, and which do we want to avoid?
- Ethical use of data tools and data pools: Who is the arbiter of these conversations? If the toy is educational, is the algorithm being checked by someone who is at least qualified to teach? If the doll is cold and the child asks his/her parents to buy a coat, is that advertising?
- Re-establishing play agency: With kids increasingly out of control over their own privacy, and even their own behaviors and habits, how can we establish appropriate standards for the kind of tools that children, adults and commercial entities have control over?
